Azam The Great set to shine at Karachi Racecourse today
By Anwar Zuberi
KARACHI, Oct 13: Azam The Great, a five-year-old bay horse, is poised to make it two in a row when the Summer Gymkhana race meeting takes place at the Karachi Racecourse on Saturday.
Promoted to higher division of class VII after a facile three lengths victory on Oct 1 he has to bring about his best to overcome a big field of 14 runners barring last minute withdrawls.
Saddled by Ghulam Channa he sprinted to victory by Ghulam Shabbir II in one min 5 1/5 sec. A form horse, he start as our days’ best and can come up with another shining performance with a good rider on his back.
He will be opposed by ten-year-old bay mare Sweet Grandy and six-year-old bay horse Lucky Luck.
A card of five races with first four going over a sprinting distance of five furlongs and the last to six has been drawn for the day. The first race begins at 1.00pm.
Eight-year-old bay horse Trust Again is on course to make it two on trot should he land the feature event.
After acceptance, six runners are in contention for the honours with owner-trainer A. Hannan’s Trust Again enjoying an edge on track record.
Three-year-old filly Black Girl who was denied a hat trick in the Independence Day Cup meeting is making her appearance after a lay-off can bring an element of surprise. Four-year-old filly Voo Doo Doll is fancied to finish among top three.
If tried by connection, Lucky Leader, a three-year-old bay colt, should pick up spoils in division II class VII race to stretch his winning run.
Installed as second favourite he posted a three lengths victory over Sweet Grandy with M. Nasir astride in the last meeting.
His lilely challengers in a strong field of 18 are colts Jack In The Box and Aces High.
Gold Tip is likely to make amends by crowning glory in the second race of the day. He should be chased by Daruwala and Queen Of Awan for places.
Syed Ali Gohar Shah’s filly Jet Zone, Dr. Abdul Karim’s King Of the Field and Abdul Hafeez’s Yanga are set to finish among top three in the opener.
