WI announce squad for Pakistan tour
BRIDGETOWN (Barbados), Oct 3: Trinidad and Tobago opening batsman Lendl Simmons was the only newcomer in the 15-man West Indies cricket squad named on Monday for three Tests to be played in Pakistan in November.
West Indies and Pakistan will meet in Tests in Lahore, Multan and Karachi, followed by five One-day internationals in December. A separate One-day squad will be named later.
The 21-year-old Simmons, also a part-time wicketkeeper, has played 39 first-class matches since his pro debut in 2002, and was chosen as a reward for his strong performances for West Indies ‘A’ in England this year, said chairman of the national selectors.
“He has been performing well and deserves an opportunity at the highest level of the game,'' Greenidge said. ''He has been developing well, and looks (to be) a good bet for the long term.''
Fast bowler Daren Powell and all-rounder Omari Banks also received recalls for the Test squad.
Powell's 17th and last Test was in New Zealand in March, while Banks had been overlooked since the tour of Sri Lanka in 2005. Both were also in the ‘A’ side's tour of England.
West Indies is in India preparing to qualify for the Champions Trophy.
