KARACHI: Oncology centre at SIUT opens today

KARACHI, Sept 21: The Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation that has been offering cancer treatment services for last 16 years will be formally inaugurating its full-fledged and well-equipped `The Hanifa Suleman Dawood Oncology Centre’ here on Friday.

A SIUT statement here on Thursday said the oncology treatment services were initiated back in 1989 following a surge in the incidence of uro-genital cancer.

The services were said to be gradually extended to other types of cancers, including bladder cancer, testicular cancer, prostate cancer, adrenal cancer, kidney cancer and cancers related to immunosuppression in transplanted cases.

“The number of patients have increased over the years and at present 10,000 of them attend the outdoor oncology services annually,” the sources said.

To increase the facilities for care of these patients, the Hanifa Suleman Dawood Center was constructed through the donation of the Suleman Dawood family.

The foundation of this Oncology Centre was laid in May 2003 following which a six-storey building was built with 150 beds.

It has modern facilities with most important equipment for treating urological cancers, radiation department, CT scanners and five operation centres.

Mrs Hanifa Dawood will be the chief guest at the inaugural ceremony on Friday.—APP
