KARACHI: Over 550 deprived of admissions: Pre-medical (male) placement list

By Our Staff Reporter

KARACHI, Sept 14: Over 550 male students have not been included in the placement lists for first year pre- medical (male) classes in government colleges, which were issued on Thursday, despite availability of seats.

According to official data, the Centralised Admission Policy (CAP) committee of the Sindh education department had offered 5,250 seats for admissions to the pre-medical (male) faculty at 38 colleges and 12 higher secondary schools, for the session 2006-07 but it only placed 3,010 students.

Besides the higher secondary schools, there were 15 colleges where admissions would be given much below the capacity. There were 12 colleges and higher secondary schools which would get very nominal number of students ranging from one to nine.

A source privy to the admission policy said that as many as 3,550 applications were received through the designated banks from male students for admissions to Class XI this year, out of which 3,010 had been selected for admissions, while the remaining were deprived of the faculty they had demanded as the admission committee in contrary to the previous practices, this year decided to enlist only the those candidates who had secured 425 marks in their matriculation examinations.

There has been no formal decision at any meeting of the CAP committee to deny admissions to the applicants who had secured less than 425 marks, added the source saying that the latest action to accommodate only those students who secured A-1, A, B and C grades was against the sprit of the government’s admission policy. The breakdown of this year’s pre-medical (male) admissions is: A-one grade-577 candidates, A grade-737, B grade-862 and C grade-834.

Last year candidates having secured a minimum of 340 marks were also accommodated at many of the colleges, fulfilling the governments’ criteria that almost all the eligible applicants, irrespective of their grades, will be placed in colleges and higher secondary schools, provided the seats were available there, said a senior teacher, adding that in a situation when the number of applications for pre-medical faculty were already less than the seats offered it was not appropriate to deprive the D and E graders of admissions in medical faculty, under any undeclared policy.

The colleges where seats are vacant significantly included Boys College Landhi-4, Degree Science College Malir, Murad Memon Goth College, Degree College Korangi 2 ½, Degree Science College Liaquatabad, Sirajudduala College, Degree College North Karachi, Boys College Manghopir, Degree College New Karachi, Degree College Bufferzone, Degree College Jungle Shah Keamari, Degree College Shamspir HawkesBay and Govt Jamia Millia Degree College. Boys College Konkar Village Gadap and Boys College Surjani Town failed to attract even one student.

When two members of the committee, including one college principal, were contacted they said that the number of applicants applying for pre-medical faculty had reduced further this year.

However, they maintained that D and E graders had not been included in order to maintain some standard in the teaching of Science subjects, though no formal decision had been taken by the admission committee so far.

Another source said that admission committee had adopted the undeclared policy only to save time and procedural length.

The chairman and secretary of the admission committee however could not be reached despite efforts. The maximum (opening) and minimum (closing) marks in the admission list for different colleges and higher secondary schools were as follows:

Adamjee Science College(816/736), Islamia Science College (701/588), PECHS Foundation Science College (699/598), Degree Boys College Gulzar-i-Hijri (670/ 465), Deg College Gulshan-i-Iqbal, Block-7, (733/655), National College (688/584), Deg College Gulistan-i-Johar (632/493), Jamia Mallia College (631/425), Superior Science College (693/529), Deg Sc/ Comm College Landhi Korangi (694/425), Boys College Landhi-4 (653/428) Allama Iqbal College for Boys (609/455), Deg Science College Malir (635/426), Deg College Malir Cantt (773/640), Degree College Murad Memon Goth (606/ 449), Boys College Korangi-2 1/2 (684/431), D J Science College (762/700), S M Science College (697/623), Aisha Bawani College (701/557), Degree Science/ Commerce College Lyari (692/425), Haji Abdullah Haroon College (622/445), Dehli College (748/690), City College Musa Colony (559/ 432), Degree Science College, Liaquatabad (700/425), Sirajudallah College (689/425), Pakistan Shipowners College (677/546),
