KARACHI, Sept 7: A high-level meeting presided over by Chief Secretary Fazlur Rehman on Thursday reviewed the matters pertaining to the revival of Karachi Circular Railway and setting up of the Karachi Urban Transport Company.
Federal Secretary Railway Shakeel Durrani and City Nazim Syed Mustafa Kamal also attended the meeting.Mr Durrani informed the meeting about a Japanese office for an investment of $800 million in KCR. He stressed on modern railway services to be introduced in Karachi. He also held out the assurance that his department would extend full cooperation in this respect.
Mr Rehman directed departments of transport and planning & development to jointly prepare the PC-I of the KUTC and submit the same by Sept 10 so that the company could be set up, for operating Sohrab Goth-Tower bus service, jointly by the CDGK and provincial government.
The meeting decided that the Sindh government and CDGK would finalise the strategy by Sept 15 and during this period, Director General of the Karachi Mass Transit Project Malik Zaheerul Islam, as a representative of the city nazim, would coordinate with the Sindh government, Pakistan Railway and other stakeholders.
It further decided that a consultant would immediately be appointed to finalise the financial structure of the project. For meeting the initial financial requirements of the project, an amount of Rs10 million would be sought. A summery to this effect would be moved to higher authorities this week by the finance department for approval.
ACS Development Ghulam Sarwar Khero, Secretary Transport Nasar Hayat, Special Secretary Development Rehana Memon and other officials of various departments attended the meeting.—PPI
