PESHAWAR, Aug 24: An accountability court on Thursday convicted a junior clerk of a blood bank of selling blood and sentenced him to four years’ rigorous imprisonment and fined him Rs2 million.
The court presided over by Mr Khalid Badshah observed that the prosecution had proved its case against the accused, Jawed Ahmad, who was a clerk in the blood bank of the Lady Reading Hospital here.
The court ordered that the convict should pay the fine within one month failing which the amount should be recovered by selling his property.
The accused was arrested on Nov 24, 2004, after an FIR was registered against him at the Kabuli police station under section 419 and 420 of Pakistan Penal Code. Initially, the anti-corruption establishment dealt with the case. Later, the National Accountability Bureau (Frontier) received the case and filed a reference against the accused in an accountability court.
The NAB filed the reference for about Rs two million against the accused. The NAB claimed that the blood donated by people was not registered in the record, rather the accused maintained another register for the purpose. It was added that he used to that blood to patients and the hospital administration was not aware about that fact.
