Excise duty revenue up by 11.7pc

ISLAMABAD, Aug 21: The Central Board of Revenue (CBR) has raised Rs53.102 billion as Federal Excise Duty (FED) from six major items during the fiscal year 2006 as against Rs47.581 billion, indicating an increase of 11.7 per cent.

Official figures available with Dawn indicated that the share of FED from the six items stood at 89.6 per cent during the year under review showing the narrow base of the taxation system.

The product-wise details showed that the FED collection from cigarettes stood at Rs24.447 billion during the fiscal year 2006 as against Rs21.879 billion, an increase of 11.7 per cent.

The FED collections from cement increased by 14.2 per cent to Rs12.630 billion during the year under review as against Rs11.055 billion in the previous year; an increase of 31.4 per cent in FED collections from beverages to Rs5.942 billion as against Rs4.521 billion and an increase of 2.4 per cent in FED from perfumery and cosmetics to Rs5.88 billion as against Rs5.74 billion.

However, the FED collections from POL products have declined by 3.2 per cent to Rs3.746 billion in the fiscal year 2006 as against Rs3.868 billion over the previous year.
