KARACHI, Aug 18: The city authorities have not constituted any survey or inquiry committee to assess the damages caused by recent monsoon rains in the metropolis.

Heavy rains have badly damaged almost all the major roads where craters and potholes have appeared besides disappearance of carpeting from a number of thoroughfares. However, no action has so far been taken against the concerned contractors, who allegedly use substandard material in roadwork.

Business Recorder Road, G. Allana Road, University Road, Burnes Road, Keamari Road, M.A. Jinnah Road, almost all roads in Saddar as well as many other roads in the metropolis have been suffered badly by the rains.

Vehicles usually get stuck due to ditches on the roads, which not only damage vehicles but also cause worse traffic jams. Thursday’s heavy downpour added to the miseries of commuters and pedestrians.

Another danger was dangling live power cables, which have taken lives of over dozen people who were electrocuted while wading through the stagnant rainwater.

In these circumstances, a committee need to be formed to assess damages to roads and other civic infrastructure by rains and fix responsibility of the large-scale devastation.—PPI
