By Rashid Javed

ABBOTTABAD, Aug 3: At least 19 people were killed and 10 others wounded in landslides and flash floods caused by torrential rains in various areas of Mansehra and Batgram districts on Thursday.

Police officials said that 14 people were killed in hilly areas of Mansehra district while five others were killed in the Rashag area of the Allai tehsil in Batagram district. Several houses collapsed, while various roads in both districts were closed because of landslides.

District Police Officer (DPO), Mansehra, Waqas Nazeer said that 10 people were killed in the Daadar area after a landslide hit a tent village on Thursday morning. The tent village was set up for survivors of the last year’s earthquake.

Residents said that the landslide levelled several tents in the relief camp, burying all victims alive.

Sources said that a man was killed after roof of a house caved in because of heavy rain in Bhogar Mang.

In Balakot, three people drowned in a flash flood as they tried to cross the Bur Nullah. They were identified as Janat Bibi and Shah Zulah. A boy’s body that was recovered from Sat Bani Nullah could not be identified.

In Batagram, lightning strikes and landslide hit dozens of houses, killing five people.

The Mansehra DCO said that landslides had hit many valleys and closed the main Mansehra-Balakot road, while the approach road to the Siran valley had also been closed.

An official said the Kalam valley had been cut off from Mingora and Behrain.
