Over 70 held in Landi Kotal after clashes

By Ibrahim Shinwari

LANDI KOTAL (Khyber Agency), July 21: Political authorities of the Khyber Agency on Friday rounded up over 70 Zakhakhel tribesmen from a bazaar area in the Landi Kotal tehsil after three days of bloody clashes.

Sources said almost all the arrested people were supporters of Lashkar-i-Islami fighting against their rival religious group Ansar-ul-Islam in the Bara tehsil. Three people had been killed and over a dozen others injured in the clashes, they said.

The tribesmen were arrested to put pressure on their elders to expel Lashkar-i-Islami chief Mangal Bagh from the Gogrina village, the sources maintained.

The administration has stopped privileges and stipends of Zakhakhel elders and salaries of over 400 Khasadar force personnel.
