2 held after jirga order on infants’ marriage

By Niaz M. Khan

SANGHAR, July 18: The Shahdadpur police on Tuesday arrested two feudal lords for presiding over a jirga that decided that a peasant would give his two infant daughters in marriage as repayment for a loan of Rs25,000.

The peasant, Bhoongar Khoso, told newsmen that under the jirga decision he was to give his daughters, one-year-old Mooran and two-year-old Marvi, in marriage to the infant sons of Sohrab Rind.

Ali Nawaz and Mohammad Ramzan were arrested for presiding over the jirga and handing down the decision. Sohrab Rind also participated in the jirga.

Mr Khoso said Sohrab Rind had given him Rs25,000 in return for working in his field in Nawabshah. He said the feudal lord drove him out of the field when the crop became ready for harvest and demanded the money.

He said that he faced a fine of Rs500,000 if he informed police about the jirga decision.

Shahdadpur police registered a case against Sardar Ghulam Rasool Rind, Ali Nawaz Rind, Mohammad Ramzan Rind, Sohrab Rind and Mir Hassan Rind.

But Mr Khoso alleged that the police were siding with the feudal lords.

He demanded that the case be handed over to Hyderabad or Mirpurkhas police.
