PBSA in hunt for snooker coach


KARACHI, July 15: Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) and Pakistan Olympic Association (POA) have given green signal to Pakistan Billiards and Snooker Association (PBSA) to hire a foreign coach to train and prepare national squad for Doha Asian Games scheduled to be held in December.

PBSA president, Ali Asghar Valika and vice-president Alamgir Anwar Shaikh, recently visited Islamabad where they held meetings with Director PSB Lt. Col. (Retd) Salahuddin and Director Operation PST Col.Yahya.

PSB will be paying expenses for hiring a foreign coach for three months.

“We have approached International Billiards and Snooker Federation (IBSAF) for hiring a suitable candidate for the coach. It will definitely benefit Pakistan cuemen in build-up for Asian Games,” stressed PBSA chief.

Pakistan players will be featuring in snooker, billiards and pool events of the games.

Three gold will be at offer in snooker singles, doubles and team competition, two in billiards doubles and singles and two pool gold medals.

He said both PSB and PST had promised to extend complete financial assistance for staging next year's 23rd edition of Asian Snooker Championship scheduled to be held at Arabian Sea Country Club Karachi from July 2 to 8, 2007.

US$ five million would be required to stage the mega continental event which Pakistan will be hosting for the record fourth time.

He said he also visited the under construction PSB Billiards Sports Complex which will be ready by September.

PBSA chief said next year's National Snooker Championship will be held at newly constructed complex.

He said PSB has also increased their yearly grant from rupees six lacks to Rs660,000 from 2006 with an increase of ten percent.

Besides this, PSB will also be funding Rs400,000 for Pakistan's participation in the snooker series to be held against India at New Delhi in September and Pakistan's participation in the world championship in Amman (Jordan) in November.—APP
