HYDERABAD, July 12: Three women, being tried under Hudood laws, were granted bail by concerned courts of law on Wednesday after their bail applications were submitted by their counsel against the backdrop of recently promulgated presidential ordinance.

One of the women was released from jail, her counsel said.

According to their counsel Ishtiaq Ahmed Memon and Wali Mohammad Thebo of the Legal Aid Committee (LAC), formed by Justice (rtd) Nasir Aslam Zahid, the women who were granted bail are Rani Nadeem, Nazia, wife of Mohammad Akram, and Hajira Ali Ahmed.

Sureties for Rani Nadeem and Hajira Ali Ahmed would be deposited later while Nazia’s surety was deposited on Wednesday.

Rani Nadeem’s bail was accepted by the seventh additional district judge in a case of 17(3) of the Hudood Ordinance for a sum of Rs10,000.

On October 7, 2005 she was charged in the case, lodged by A-section police station Latifabad on the complaint of Dr.Aftab.

Nazia, wife of Mohammad Akram, was granted bail by fourth additional district judge for a sum of Rs25,000 in a case lodged under sections 506(2) PPC and 4 of the Zina and Hudood Ordinance.

She was sent to jail on May 19, 2006.

“She was released late evening today”, said Ishtiaq Memon, her counsel.

The Sixth additional district judge granted bail to Hajira Ali Ahmed in a case of 11/16 of the Zina and Hudood Ordinance for a sum of Rs50,000. The case was lodged by Pinyari police and she was sent to jail on June 26, 2005.

LAC lawyers said that 11 women, imprisoned in special prison for women Hyderabad, would benefit from presidential ordinance whereas there are 36 under-trial women prisoners, who were facing different charges, including murder.

According to Ishtiaq Memon, applications for four women, Nazeeran, Bano, Maryam and Abida, challaned by Daur police under sections 364 and 34 PPC, and their bail applications would be filed before sessions court Nawabshah by their respective counsel as they are also entitled to bail under the presidential ordinance.

Likewise, the bail application of Ms Noorjehan is fixed for hearing before sixth additional district judge on July 19 in four separate cases, lodged under section of 17(3) of the Hudood Ordinance lodged with the B-section police.
