KARACHI, July 2: Following successive failures six-year-old bay mare, Velvet Green, upset the applecart when she sprinted to maiden victory in the Summer Gymkhana race meeting at the Karachi Racecourse on Sunday.

Owned by Mohammad Ilyas and trained by Sadiq Hussain, she was ridden home by M. Nasir beating chestnut filly, Arabian Queen, by half length.

Finishing further half length behind was fancied three-year-old bay colt, The Concord, while chestnut, Forget Me Not, completed the frame.

Nasir had another winner in Desperado in the next race to complete a double.

Desperado became favourite in the re-betting that was ordered after public fancy Master Of Disaster broke the gate and bolted away to be withdrawn from the race.

The field was reduced to eight and Desperado presented its owner with a winner beating mare, Fizza, by five lengths.

Ghulam Shabbir II and Tariq Baran also came out with a brace of winners.

After piloting Swift Arrival to a facile 6 ¼ length victory in the opener, the former returned with flying colours on Closing Arguments by 10 lengths in the fifth race.

Similarly, the latter rode second favourite Annaba home after edging out Daruwala by five lengths to grab the fourth race and went on to complete the feat by riding Fantasia to victory in the concluding event.

In another race four-year-old filly, Butter Fly, from the stables of Shah Mardan Shah Pir Pagara justified her top rating when she outclassed Thanks Naeem by 10 lengths to make it two in a row.
