SPOs affect working of police station

By Our Staff Reporter

RAWALPINDI, June 23: The appointment of Supervisory Police Officers (SPOs) is affecting the working of police stations and ASPs, SPs and DSPs are feeling disgraced to work as SPO at the police station.

In another move, the people have been asked to come to the office of the deputy inspector general (DIG) of police Rawalpindi, if their problems were not solved by the Supervisory Police Officers.

The Punjab government has introduced the new police system of apparently to redress public complaints against police. Initially, it has been introduced in five cities including Rawalpindi and Gujranwala.

Under the new system which is not in the police act 1861 nor in the Police Order 2002, sub-divisional headquarters of urban areas were abolished and ASPs, SPs and DSPs were appointed as SPOs at the police stations.

The ASPs who were recruited in Grade-17 are feeling disgraced to work as SPO at the police station, while the SHOs are also feeling uneasy as they have to vacate their seat in the presence of SPO.

Public Relations Officer for the DIG Rawalpindi have requested the people to contact the DIG office, if their problems were not solved by the SPOs.

Some senior police officers fear that a tug of war could start between SHOs and SPOs after the induction of new police system.

When a senior police officer who had been very close to the formation of Police Order 2002, was contacted, he said that there had been no proposal of appointing SPOs and asking them to sit at the police station.

Under the new system, SPOs and SHOs would have a raise in their salary to Rs20,000 and Rs15000 respectively, but the SPOs and SHOs say that no official notification has been issued in this regard so far.
