Sri Lanka take narrow lead

NOTTINGHAM (England), June 3: Sri Lanka dismissed England for 229 to secure a two-run first-innings lead on the second day of the third and final Test on Saturday.

The tourists lost Michael Vandort for five in the second innings with Upul Tharanga (17) and Kumar Sangakkara (22) extending the overall lead to 47 runs at close of play.

Paul Collingwood top-scored for the home side with 48 runs as the ball continued to dominate the bat at Trent Bridge.

England, resuming on 53 for two after dismissing the touring side for 231 on the opening day, collapsed to 118 for five before Collingwood helped to salvage the innings.

England, who were bowled out in the final session, lead the series 1-0. Muttiah Muralitharan took three for 62 off 31 overs.

It was a blundering, go-slow performance by England.

Only 52 runs were scored from 35 overs in the afternoon, with six of them coming from one shot when Collingwood, playing for his Test future as Michael Vaughan prepares to return to the side, hoisted Muralitharan into the crowd at wide long on.

Two balls later, though, he was gone. He top-edged straight into the hands of Mahela Jayawardene at short fine leg after making 41.

Chaminda Vaas ended Collingwood’s long resistance after tea with the Durham right-hander falling leg-before-wicket without adding to his score.

Jon Lewis, playing in his first Test, hit some lusty blows in scoring 20 during a dogged ninth-wicket partnership with Matthew Hoggard.

Hoggard was adjudged caught behind by Australian umpire Darrell Hair for 10. TV replays suggested the ball had missed the bat as Muralitharan outfoxed the tail-ender with a doosra.

Lewis was last man to be out, well caught in the deep by Tillekeratne Dilshan to give unorthodox fast bowler Lasith Malinga his second wicket.
