Double crown for Zuhair

KARACHI, June 3: Zuhair Raza claimed double crown in the 10th Anti Tobacco Day tennis tournament on Saturday.

He first teamed up with Omer Shahid to inflict 6-4, 6-4 defeat on Talha Saeed-Muneeb Khan to land doubles title. Earlier, the pair got the better of Ali Imran-Azher Qureshi 6-1, 6-2 to cruise into the final.

The country’s No 1 U-15 player completed his feat by handing 6-2, 6-2 defeat to his doubles partner Omer to add U-15 singles crown.

Another rising player and top seed Ghulam Abbas rallied to beat third seed Abbas Raza in three sets to annex Juniors U-18 title.

Abbas down 0-1, came back charging to clinch the next two sets. The scores were 2-6, 6-2, 6-4.

“Being top seed I was a bit nervous and under pressure in the opener. However, I stormed back with strong forehand to maintain top billing,” he told Dawn.

Zahid Hussain-Akbar Hayat Khan also picked up double crown grabbing Veteran’s doubles and Executive doubles.

Boys U-15 singles (semifinal): Zuhair Raza bt Abdul Rehman 6-3, 6-2 (final) Zuhair Raza bt Omer Shahid 6-2, 6-2.

Boys U-15 doubles (semifinal): Zuhair Raza-Omer Shahid by Ali Imran-Azher Qureshi 6-1, 6-2 (final) Zuhair Raza-Omer Shahid bt Talha Saeed-Muneeb Khan 6-4, 6-4.

Juniors U-18 singles (final): Ghulam Abbas bt Abbas Raza 2-6, 6-2, 6-4.

Women’s singles (semifinal): Shandana Khan bt Dr. Shahrukh 6-3, 7-5.

Veteran’s doubles (final): Zahid Hussain-Akbar Hayat Khan bt Gul Hameed-Saeed Ahmed 6-1, 6-1.

Executive doubles (final): Zahid Hussain-Akbar Hayat Khan bt Shahid Ilyas-Rashid Mooraj 6-2, 6-3.

Sunday’s fixtures: 5.00pm: Men’s singles (final): Nomi Qamar v Jalil Khan

Women’s singles (final): Sehr Khawaja v Shandana Khan.
