ISLAMABAD, May 25: Wapda claimed the second National Squash Team Championship on Thursday with a 2-1 defeat of Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) at the Mushaf Squash Complex.
On the women's side however, Wapda went down to Army 1-2 as the championship came to a close after a week of exciting squash.
In the men's final Wapda did not start off well, their ace player Yasir Butt losing to Majid Khan 8-10, 1-9, 2-9 following a 48-minute encounter.
But the talented Farhan Mahboob ensured that things did not go out of hand with a 9-3, 9-0, 9-7 knockout of Basit Ashfaq that squared the contest.
Later Aamir Atlas Khan, nephew of the legendary Jansher Khan sealed Wapda's victory but not before being extended to four games by Bilal Zaman.
Aamir who was made to fight hard in an engrossing match that lasted nearly an hour, eventually picked up a 9-4, 9-1, 7-9, 9-2 victory.
Misbah Rani gave Army a fine start in the women's final by edging Muqaddas Ashraf in a hard-fought match 7-9, 9-4, 10-8, 1-9, 9-2. But the contest was quickly put on an even keel by Wapda's Maria Toor who beat Sarah Awan 10-8, 9-5, 9-5 in just about 25 minutes.
Zoya Khalid then wrapped it all up for Army overcoming Aliya Sarfraz 10-8, 9-6, 9-7 in 38 minutes.
The Pakistan Squash Federation, in addition to the medals and trophies, awarded Rs100,000 to the men's winners and Rs50,000 to Army's women's team.
Shahnawaz earned a cash award of Rs5,000 for showing remarkable improvement in his game and exhibiting exemplary conduct on court.
