Police torture of sugar mill workers condemned

Bureau Report

HYDERABAD, May 13: The Sindh National Students Federation staged a protest to condemn police torture of the workers of Thatta and Dadu sugar mills in Karachi.

Speaking at the demonstration here on Friday, student leaders Lala Qurban Sodhro, Irfan Malik and Pir Bux condemned the violence and said the torture of the workers and humiliation of women were despicable.

They demanded arrest and punishment to the police officers involved in the incident.

STPP: Sindh Taraqqi Pasand Party chairman Dr Qadir Magsi condemned the police violence against the sugar mill workers.

In a statement faxed to Dawn, Dr Magsi said the government had pledged to offer a golden handshake to workers, but it had not honoured the commitment.

Instead of provision of relief, the protesting workers and women had been subjected to brutalities, he said. He said the rulers were suppressing the people demanding their rights. Humiliation of women at the hands of police was despicable, he added.

TRAFFIC SCHEDULE: Hyderabad District Nazim Kanwar Naveed Jamil has taken a serious notice of the violation of a traffic schedule by trucks and goods transport owners.

He directed the Hyderabad DPO and DSP traffic on Thursday to implement the schedule about the entry of trucks and goods transport in the city.
