Victory Road fancied to land big race, Horse of the Year award

By Anwar Zuberi

KARACHI, April 29: Four-year-old bay filly, Victory Road, is fancied to capture the Emirates Farm Trophy and earn the ‘Horse of the Year’ award in the Gymkhana race meeting at the Karachi Racecourse on Sunday.

To be run over a distance of 10 furlongs it is the eighth and concluding event of the day restricted for Pakistani bred horses of three years and upwards.

Emirates Farm Trophy is the third and last race to be counted for ‘Horse of the Year’ award.

Victory Road has emerged as a strong contender for the award accumulating eight points from the previous outings. After landing the five furlongs Sprinter’s Cup on April 2, she was beaten to second place by another filly, Makina, in the Mile Championship on April 16.

Victory Road should be chased by Makina and Naseeb-e-Arab for places. However, Al Faris can also put up a good show provided he takes a level start.

A sum of Rs100,000 and a cup are at the stake for the winner of Emirates Farm Trophy.

A card of eight races has been drawn for the day with first race starting at 1.00pm.

With two consecutive wins under her belt, Haji Khuda Bux Rajar’s three-year-old filly, Stormy Kiss, is poised to make it three in a row should she win the six furlongs opener.

Owner’s another horse in the field, mare, Smiling Face, is tipped for place along with Kicking King.

Gullu’s Government, a five-year-old dark bay horse, should make amends by picking up the six furlongs next race with six horses in fray. Bilal Choice and Aie Bahar should settle for places.

On his current form, three-year-old colt, The Conqueror’s, should gallop away with the third race to repeat his winning feat. He was home by two lengths in the last outing with M. Nasir astride.

If all goes well, mare, Ultimate Victory, should prove her mettle by grabbing the fourth race of the programme.

Also in the run is Aajoo Bajoo who can surprise the pundits if tried by the connections.

Four-year-old filly, Sea Of Love, from the stables of Ehtisham, should return with flying colours in the fifth race. She should be chased by Tun Baba Tun and Daruwala.

M. R. Hussain’s Mera Jugnoo is tipped to outpace opponent’s in the sixth race. Another filly, Sky Girl, has the potential to upset the applecart.

Three-year-old colt, Red Rufus, who had to be content with second slot behind Johnnie Walker last Sunday, is expected to make amends by grabbing the seventh race.
