LAHORE, April 29: The 35th Lahore Winter Meeting featuring the May Day cup with a handsome prize-money on offer and a star studded cast will attract a large number of sports connoisseurs at the Racecourse on Sunday.
In view of the hot summer being braved by the people of Lahore, the Lahore Race Club (LRC) stewards have decided to hold day and night racing from now onwards with the first race to start at 4pm.
The May Day Cup has been instituted to observe the international labour day marking the martyrdom of Chicago (USA) workers.
A class IV handicap race to be gone over 1400m, there are seven colts and fillies, who will be jostling for the cup.
However, four of them are on chance. They are Chan, River Dancer, Trace Kim and Alexander.
They should fight for the top honours with Chan enjoying advantage on form and handicap. This will be the sixth race of the day.
In the supporting and seventh race, Empire Maker will be on the trot to make it two in a row. He has only to beat Royal Power and Puma The Great.
There are three strong contenders in the fifth and second supporting event, the May Day Plate class IV division III to be gone over 1400 metres.
They are Cobbler, Ferrari and Herry Can View. Cobbler thought promoted in the handicap giving one stone advantage to Herry Can View is still the best looking colt to win the top honours.
The fourth race has a big field of 17 acceptors barring last-minute withdrawal.
Among them on top is the colt Tuman Khan ( Tora Bora-Polly Darshan), who was beaten on his last outing should make amends and win this time.
The colt is owned by Mr Ali Muhammad Al-Shamsi, the United Arab Emirate (UAE) ambassador in Islambad, who incidentally is the first foreign diplomat to own a race-horse in Pakistan.
Charming King, Para Game and Scarlet Empress will be his challengers, if any.
A card of seven events has been drawn for the first day and night racing card promising some good and exciting finishes.
The first two races will be held over the sprinting distance of 900 metres, two over 1200 metres and three over 1400 metres.
