Strike in Diamer against dam

By Our Correspondent

GILGIT, April 26: All shops in Diamer remained closed as people observed a strike on the occasion of foundation laying of Diamer-Bhasha dam by President Pervez Musharraf on Wednesday.

It was the second day of strike in Diamer district, sources said.

They said that the Anti-dam committee also staged sit-in on the Karakoram highway in Chilas town which would continued for another two days.

People of Diamer, who would lose a considerable chunk of their land and business due to construction of the dam, urged the president to withdraw the decision because the dam would deprive them of their homes and lands.

Meanwhile, thousands of people were stuck on KKH when security forces blocked the road for nine hours to facilitate President Musharraf’s visit.
