SUKKUR, April 26: Lawmaker Pervaiz Masih has called for interfaith harmony and urged minorities to demonstrate the spirit of accommodation and restraint.

The government would make sincere efforts to repair the two churches damaged in an attack, said Mr Masih, convener of the sub-committee of the standing committee on minorities of the National Assembly.

Speaking at a meeting with the DCO Sukkur in his office on Wednesday, he told members of the minority community present on the occasion that an inquiry against police officers responsible for the security lapse was underway.

District Police Officer Ghulam Shabbir Shaikh briefed the sub-committee on the incident. DCO Shafique Ahmed Khoso presenting a report said the district government had paid Rs272,000 to the people affected in the incident.

He said work on the damaged classrooms of Saint Mary’s School would be started within three days and informed the committee that as and when the provincial government approved funds, the repair of the churches would begin.

Representatives of the minority expressed their views on the incident and told the body about services rendered by their community in the education sector of the country.

Pervaiz Masih held out assurance that the government would made every effort for their safety and security and expressed the hope that such incidents would not recur.

Better understanding between the minority community and the Muslim would be ensured to avoid such untoward incidents, he added.

The meeting was attended by sub-committee members Ms Riffat Javaid Khan Kahloon, Dev Das, Ramesh Lal and other officers concerned.
