US colonel to be charged over Iraq abuse

WASHINGTON, April 26: US military authorities plan to charge an army colonel over abuse at the Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq — making him the most senior officer to face legal action, media reports said on Wednesday.

Lieutenant-Colonel Steven Jordan, a former head of the Abu Ghraib interrogation centre, will be charged with dereliction of duty, lying to investigators and conduct unbecoming of an officer, the Washington Post and New York Times quoted the officer’s lawyer as saying.

Jordan is the last major figure from the Abu Ghraib scandal whose fate remains outstanding.

The officer’s lawyer said the charges were expected to be made on Friday.—AFP
