ISLAMABAD, April 25: Jailed president of the Alliance for Restoration of Democracy Makhdoom Javed Hashmi has said army’s role in the country’s defence is acceptable but the role of GHQ (General Headquarters) in politics is unacceptable.

In a statement issued from Kot Lakhpat Jail and released by the Secretariat of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) here on Tuesday, Mr Hashmi said the time had come all political parties united on a one-point agenda of eliminating the GHQ’s political role.

Mr Hashmi, who is also the acting PML-N president, said the meeting between former prime ministers Nawaz Sharif and Benazir Bhutto would help end the GHQ’s political role and both the leaders had laid its foundation. He said the military rulers were afraid of the unity of the two major political parties and had started efforts to create rifts among the opposition parties.
