Johnnie Walker obliges punters with second win on trot

By Anwar Zuberi

KARACHI, April 23: Four-year-old chestnut colt, Johnnie Walker, obliged the race goers by sprinting to fluent victory to make it two in a row in the Summer Gymkhana race meeting at the Karachi Racecourse on Sunday.

The sibling came to fore after registering a maiden win in the last outing on April 16 and was predicted to stretch his winning run which he did in style.

Trained by M. Yaqoob Butt, he was piloted home by M. Nasir in the five furlongs fourth race.

Finishing three lengths behind was three-year-old colt, Red Rufus. Mare Sparkling Lady settled for the third place while Qandhar completed the frame.

Jockey M. Nasir excelled among riders and ended the day with a splendid treble. Besides Johnnie Walker, his other winners were Daruwala and Smiling Face.

Mohammad Essa, champion jockey of 2005, returned with a brace of winners by riding Leo Again and Jadugar to victory.

Raaz, a nine-year-old bay horse, surprised all and sundry as he celebrated his first triumph of the year in the opener.

He was chased by Home Maid and Ladla for the next two places. Mare, Choti Dunya, who was installed favourite, was off colour and even failed to finish on the board.

Tipped to win in these columns, Daruwala justified his billing when he galloped to victory in the next event.

He edged out Tun Baba Tun by three lengths while Poply Billy had to be content with third place.

After the failure of Choti Dunya in the opener, owner-cum-trainer M. Yaqoob Butt met with success when Leo Again outpaced Raat Ki Rani by three lengths in the following race.

Later the victory of Johnnie Walker enabled Butt to complete double as a trainer.

Backed by the connections, mare, Smiling Face, overcame her bad patch when she picked up the fifth race by a wide margin of 11 lengths.

She was followed by Bright And Early and Haseena-e-Arab.

Thoroughbred Jadugar picked up the spoils when he outpaced Thanks Naeem by 12 lengths. Mare, Sonia, occupied third place.

In a late burst, Dragun Heart overtook Gullu’s Government to claim honours in the concluding event.

Lying fourth after getting into straight, Silent Witness secured second place while Gullu’s Government was placed third. Lucky Step completed the frame.

After the race, rider of Lucky Step M. Kashif filed an objection against Silent Witness for crossing and bumping which was overruled by the KRC Administrator.

On the contrary, Kashif was fined Rs500 for raising a frivolous objection.
