Warne, MacGill spin Bangladesh to heavy defeat
CHITTAGONG (Bangladesh), April 20: Leg-spinners Shane Warne and Stuart MacGill helped Australia crush Bangladesh by an innings and 80 runs in the second Test to complete a 2-0 series whitewash on Thursday.
Warne and MacGill took six wickets on the fifth morning to bundle out the hosts for 304 in their second innings.
Warne completed his 36th five-wicket haul in Tests with figures of five for 113 and MacGill took 4-95.
The visitors never looked threatened after they declared their first innings on 581-4, a lead of 384, following nightwatchman Jason Gillespie's record-breaking innings of 201 not out on Wednesday.
The paceman, who took eight wickets in the two matches, picked up both Man-of-the-Match and Man-of-the-Series awards for his efforts.
“They lost the game on the first day. They should have got at least 300, batting first,” Australian skipper Ricky Ponting said.
Resuming on 195-4, Bangladesh faced a huge task to make Australia bat again and the hosts could only add 109 runs in 26.2 overs on the final day.
First Test centurion opener Shahriar Nafees scored 79 before he was caught behind by Adam Gilchrist off Warne, who also removed hard hitter Mashrafe Mortaza (1) when Gillespie caught him at mid-on.
Mohammad Rafique (65) then delighted local spectators with his fourth Test fifty, hitting six sixes and two fours in a 53-ball innings that included three maximums off four deliveries in one Warne over.
Rafique was the last man out when he was caught by Warne off the bowling of MacGill, who had earlier removed Abdur Razzak (0), Khaled Mashud (11) and Aftab Ahmed (18).
“Our performance in both innings of the two matches was contrasting... good in one while failing in the other,” Bangladesh coach Dav Whatmore said.
Bangladesh captain Habibul Bashar agreed with his coach, and felt that his side still had a lot to learn.
“The Test has taught us that we must have consistency and play well in both innings to compete in a match,” he said.
Australia won the first Test by three wickets and the sides will next play a three-match One-day International series starting in Chittagong on Sunday.
