Major reshuffle in PPP likely

ISLAMABAD, April 18: Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Chairperson Benazir Bhutto has decided to change some party office-bearers at central and provincial levels and some important decisions in this regard are expected in the next few weeks, sources told Dawn on Tuesday.

Ms Bhutto has already appointed MPA Farzana Raja as the information secretary of the party’s Punjab chapter in place of Naveed Chaudhry, who had been occupying this office for the last over five years.

The official notification regarding appointment of Ms Raja as the Punjab information secretary was issued by the party’s secretary general on Tuesday.

There are reports that Ms Bhutto has also decided to replace central information secretary Taj Haider and MNA Sherry Rehman has been tipped as the main contender for the office. However, there was no official confirmation of the report.

When contacted, both PPP spokesman Farhatullah Babar and Taj Haider said they did not have any such information. Mr Haider said those who had appointed him as the information secretary had full right to remove him from the office.

Meanwhile, the sources said PPP Punjab president Qasim Zia was also being replaced and he would be asked to continue his work as opposition leader in the Punjab Assembly. The sources said Ms Bhutto was making these changes keeping in view the requirements for the next general elections.

They said Ms Bhutto had no complaints with these office-bearers, but she wanted to give chance to other party leaders to show their worth.—Staff Reporter
