Hockey: Pakistan edge past England

CHANGZHOU (China), April 17: Pakistan edged past England 3-2 in a crucial World Cup hockey qualifying round match on Monday, brightening the hope to play World Cup final in September this year.

England secured an early lead through Richard Mantell who scored through powerful drag-flick. Pakistan equalized when Rehan Butt found the target in the 24th minute off a short corner.

Mudassir Ali Khan slammed home to give Pakistan lead, while the Englishmen restored parity in the 49th minute when Simon Mantell hit the backboards.

Mohammad Saqlain scored the match-winner 10 minutes later to give Pakistan victory.

“It was a well-deserved victory since our team performed extremely well,” said team manager Saeed Khan.
