Strike in parts of Punjab

FAISALABAD, April 12: A complete strike was observed here on Wednesday in protest against a bomb blast in Karachi on the call of the Sunni Tehrik, Faisalabad, and the All Pakistan Anjuman Tajiran.

All shopping centres around eight bazaars, Narwala Road, Kotwali Road, Railway Road, Circular Road, Satiana Road and other areas remained closed throughout the day.

The yarn market, cloth markets, grocery markets, electronics market and even the grain market shut their business activities. In some of the areas, shopkeepers opened their shops in the morning.

A group of Sunni Tehrik activists marched through city shopping areas and forced shopkeepers to observe the strike. However, they were intercepted by the police and three of them were rounded up.

The policemen were deployed in force in all busy areas of the city to avoid any untoward incident.

Meanwhile, the local administration cancelled all religious and public gatherings in the district and directed all SHOs to implement the order in letter and spirit.

A mega chicken festival to be arranged for the promotion of poultry industry had also been postponed besides cancelling of other related functions.

SIALKOT: The Jamaat-i-Ahle Sunnah and Sunni Tehrik, Sialkot have announced a two-day complete shutterdown and strike in the city on April 13 and 14 as a protest against the Karachi incident.

This was decided at a meeting held here on Wednesday at the ground of Imam Sahib shrine with AJK Minister Sahibzada Hamid Raza in the chair.

The meeting unanimously passed resolutions condemning terrorism at Nishtar Park, Karachi.

OKARA: A complete strike was observed in Okara as well.

Reports said activists of almost all religious and political parties and lawyers took out a protest rally condemning the Nishter Park bomb explosion in which more than 50 people were killed.

Protesters, led by Maulana Muhammad Fazalur Rehman, Sufi Muhammad Latif Naqash Bandi and Mufti Muhammad Iqbal Chishti, marched on various city bazaars and demanded effective steps to maintain peace and order in the country.

Meanwhile, PPP district president Muhammad Ashraf Khan Sohna, PML-N chief Mian Muhammad Zaman, MMA president Dr Liaquat Ali Kausar, Maulana Syed Amir Husain Gillani of JUI-F, Mian Muhammad Munir and Maulana Moeenuddin Lakhvi have condemned the incident and demanded early arrest of terrorists. The district bar association also observed strike and no lawyer appeared in the court.

BAHAWALPUR: A partial strike was observed and many protest rallies were taken out in Bahawalpur.

The news of bomb blast at Nishtar Park was received with shock and sorrow. Local traders observed a partial strike to join the mourning.

A number of people burnt tyres at Sabzi Mandi chowk to express their resentment over the loss of lives. Activists of Sunni Tehrik brought out two protest rallies.

Opposition leaders also condemned the incident.
