Sri Lanka recalls Zoysa for England

COLOMBO, April 10: Sri Lanka selectors on Monday recalled fast bowler Nuwan Zoysa for the tour to England starting later this month.

The 27-year-old played the last of his 30 Tests in July 2004 before a slump in form kept him out of the side, but a recent good run earned his inclusion in a 16-man squad selected for a three-Test series that starts at Lord's on May 11.

The left-armer was also dropped from the one-day side last November but has won back a place in the team after claiming 26 wickets at 19.30 during the recent domestic season.

Zoysa is one of five fast bowlers selected for the tour including Chaminda Vaas, Lasith Malinga, Farveez Maharoof and Nuwan Kulasekera.

Dilhara Fernando has been dropped to allow him to work on problems with his run-up and Ruchira Perera was not available for selection due to a hamstring injury.

Marvan Atapattu captain's the squad subject to his fitness, which will be assessed later in the week. The 35-year-old is suffering from a lower back injury which has forced him out of Sri Lanka's last two series.

Opener Ian Daniel and middle order batsman Jehan Mubarak have been named as reserves for the tour.

Sri Lanka have also picked a full-time wicket-keeper, Prasanna Jayawardene, primarily to allow Kumar Sangakkara to rest during pratice matches.

The side are due to depart on April 19 and will play three warm-up matches against British Universities, Derbyshire and England ‘A’ before the opening Test.

The Tests will be followed by a five-match One-day International series.

Squad: Marvan Atapattu (captain), Mahela Jayawardene, Kumar Sangakkara, Upul Tharanga, Michael Vandort, Tillekeratne Dilshan, Thilan Samaraweera, Chamara Kapugedera, Chaminda Vaas, Farveez Maharoof, Lasith Malinga, Nuwan Kulasekera, Muttiah Muralitharan, Malinga Bandara, Prasanna Jayawardene, Nuwan Zoysa.

Reserves: Ian Daniel, Jehan Mubarak.—Reuters
