KARACHI, April 10: The Sindh Assembly, which reassembled here on Monday after two-day weekend break, was adjourned till Thursday morning soon after offering fateha for the victims of the Faizan-i-Madina stampede on Sunday in which over 30 women and children were killed and scores of others injured.

Deputy Speaker Rahila Tiwana, who was presiding over the session, recognized three members each from treasury and opposition benches to speak on their points of order regarding the tragedy. Later fateha was offered for the departed souls.

The chair then announced that to facilitate mourning for the tragedy victims and observance of Eid Miladun Nabi (SAW) in with religious fervour, the house was being adjourned till Thursday morning.

Earlier, the deputy speaker called the house in order at 10.50am. After recitation from the Holy Quran and Na’at, she allowed PPP MPA Shama Mithani to speak on her point of order on the tragic incident. She suggested that the session should be adjourned to mourn of victims.

MMA MPA Nasrullah Shaji backed her suggestion, describing the incident as a great tragedy which had jolted entire Pakistan.

From treasury benches, Minister for Law Iftikhar Chaudhry, and Minister for Mines and Mineral Resources Irfanullah Khan Marwat and MPA Sherwani also termed the incident a tragedy of great magnitude and supported the suggestion.

MMA’s parliamentary party leader Maulana Omar Sadiq, endorsing the motion, stressed the need for removing the causes which resulted in such a large number of casualties involving innocent women and children.

He proposed that the authorities concerned should hold a meeting with representatives of Faizan-i-Madina to chalk out ways to avoid recurrence of such incidents in future.

Makhdoom Jamiluz Zaman, PPP’s deputy parliamentary leader also wanted to speak on his point of order on the same subject, but the chair called it a day at around 11.05am before he could speak.
