KARACHI, April 9: Defending champions, Army, lived up to their top billing when they subdued last year’s losing finalist, Railways, 66-50 in the last match of the four-team super league to retain the title of Inter departmental basketball championship at NSTCC on Sunday.

Army became the only team which remained unbeaten in the competition.

In an earlier match, PAF accounted for Police 75-48 to secure second place while Railways were relegated to third slot.

The ‘Best Player of the Tournament’ award went to Muddasar Khan of Army while Pervez Hussain, also of Army, emerged as ‘Highest Scorer’ of the competition.

With eight internationals in their lineup, the soldiers had a smooth run against Railways who Saturday went down to PAF 59-60 in a nail-biting finish.

Pervez Hussain demonstrated his all round skills for the winners who led 40-25 at half time. He ended with a contribution of 24 points.

Ilyas and Mir Alam scored eight points apiece.

Allah Bux with 16 points to his credit was the highest scorer for the losing side. Amir Rashid and Arif Khan scored 9 and 7 points.

Zaheer Iqbal’s brilliant 25 points could not save Police from tasting their third

successive defeat at the hands of PAF.

Tanveer Ali shone for the airmen with 26 points. He was ably assisted by Imran Munir 19 and Gul Hasan Bangash 12.

‘I am happy the team played outstandingly throughout the contest and retain the title’, captain of the Army team, Hav. Ilyas, said after the match.
