Horse-racing: Fancied Chan claims feature event

By Aftab Gilani

LAHORE, April 9: Fancied chestnut colt, Chan partnered by jockey M. Hanif lived up to his status of hot favouritism to win the feature event during the Lahore Winter Meeting at the Racecourse on Sunday. Trained by Haji Ghulam Sarwar and owned by Malik Ghulam Qadir, the colt took an early lead to beat Run And Win by a distance in this Class IV division II handicap race over 1300m. This was the last of the seven event card.

A race earlier Usman Khawaja owned dark-bay colt, Early Arrival produced an excellent turn of foot to register a comfortable success in the supporting event gone over 1300m.

Ridden by M. Hanif and trained by Haji Ghulam Sarwar the colt beat Zardan by a distance.

Syed Pervez Hussain Shah's bred dark-bay horse Top Figure came with a strong run in the closing stages to capture the second event run over the sprinting distance of 1000m.

He pipped Tallal The Great at the finishing post by a neck's verdict in a thrilling finish.

Trainer Haji Ghulam Sarwar sent out three winners to highlight the Sunday’s races.

He saddled Queen Of Saba, Early Arrival and Chan.

His long shot mare Queen Of Saba sprang a big surprise in the fourth race when she beat stable's first fancy Tuman Khan by three-and-a-half lengths to upset Haji's own calculations in the fourth race.

The stable connections had backed Tuman Khan from 80 to 100 down to 40 to 100. Seemingly this upset the trainer too.

Jockey M. Hanif registered a good double through Late Arrival and Chan.

Five well-backed horses obliged the punters in a card of seven races.

A hazy atmosphere with cool winds blowing across the Racecourse made the proceedings lively attended by elitist connoisseurs of the sports.
