Published April 7, 2006

UNTIED NATIONS, April 6: Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz has expressed the hope that the United Nation Secretary- General’s High-Level Panel on System-Wide Coherence would prove a positive step to improve the efficiency and working of the world organisation.

Talking to newsmen after presiding over a meeting of the panel at the UN headquarters, Mr Aziz said the members of the panel gave input to further improve the efficiency of the UN.

He said the members said new initiatives should be taken to ensure implementation of the UN programmes for welfare of the people in the world.

He said the members, emphasising the need for countries to have more ‘ownership’ in the UN programmes, presented suggestions that the UN should provide assistance according to the needs of the countries.

Referring to the role of various bodies of the UN, the prime minister said the need for better coordination and cooperation among those organizations was highlighted.

He said the achievement of millennium development goals by the member states could only be possible through cooperation, coordination and effective implementations of UN programmes.

The premir said the UN system should be more transparent so that its programmes benefited every country.—APP

Our Correspondent adds: Prime Minister Aziz briefed the ambassadors of Group of 77 about the day-long deliberations of panel.

A group of ambassadors from China, Chile, Saudi Arabia, Iran and other countries attended the briefing.

Pakistan’s UN Ambassador Munir Akram told journalists under Mr Aziz’s proposal, the developing countries would have the primary responsibility for evolving, developing and executing their national development strategy.
