LUCKNOW, April 6: Four people were killed and 18 injured in clashes between Hindus and Muslims in Aligarh, a senior official said on Thursday. Trouble began when a group of Hindus found part of a wall surrounding a temple damaged on Wednesday night, Uttar Pradesh’s home secretary R.M. Shrivastava said here.
An exchange of angry words between Hindus and Muslims soon escalated to stone hurling and gunfire, Mr Shrivastava said.
“Two people were killed on the spot while two others died later in hospital,” he said, adding that all of the dead were Muslims.
Five of the injured were being treated for gunshot wounds and were in critical condition, he said.
A curfew has been imposed in parts of Aligarh where tensions were still running high following Wednesday’s incidents, he added. — AFP
