SIALKOT, April 1: The World Federation of Sporting Goods Industry has invited its Sialkot-based member soccer ball manufacturing firms through the Sialkot Chamber of Commerce and Industry to attend a global meeting.

The meeting is scheduled to be held in Beijing, China, on April 23-24 under the auspices of the WFSGI. A visit to the mechanised football manufacturing factories in Donnguan also has been arranged.

SCCI senior vice-president Faisal Mahmood Khan told journalists that this world-level event would provide the local businessmen an opportunity to learn more about the recently-introduced mechanised soccer ball manufacturing techniques.

He said WFSGI secretary-general Andre Gorgemans had invited the soccer ball manufacturing firms to participate in this unique event.

The SCCI official said a seven-member delegation of Sialkot-based WFSGI member firms, led by chamber president Dr Nauman Idrees Butt, would visit China to attend the event. It would be helpful in sharing advanced technologies and modernising the local industry.

Among the participating countries will be Pakistan, India, Vietnam, Indonesia and the Philippines.

STRANDED: Residents of Bajwat villages were stranded at the banks of River Tavi as boatmen went on strike against nonpayment of salaries for seven months by the highways department.

As many as 36 boatmen were paid by the highways department for boating two official and several private boats for ferrying villagers to and from their work places.

The protesters told newsmen on Saturday that they stopped boating in protest against nonpayment of salaries.

They chanted slogans against the department and in favour of their demands. They said they would continue their strike till the payment of their salaries.

About a month ago, 136-foot long wooden bridge collapsed due to spate in the river within a month after repair. The bridge is the only way of communication for the residents of these villages.

When contacted, the officials of highway department did not give any reason for delay in payment of salaries.

This area falls in the electoral constituency of National Assembly Speaker Chaudhry Ameer Husain.
