HARIPUR, April 1: District Nazim Yousaf Ayub Khan has said that the district council would not approve the new budget of the revenue department until it received a clarification from the provincial government about the department’s status.
The district nazim was speaking to house members at the monthly sitting of the Haripur district council here. Convener Maj (Retd) Safdar Zaman presided over the session.
Under the Local Government Ordinance, 2001, Mr Khan said, the revenue department was supposed to be devolved. But he said he had been informed through an administrative order that the power of the district government pertaining to the revenue department had been curtailed. “Unless the confusion surrounding administrative control of the revenue department is resolved, I won’t pass the annual budget of this department,” he said.
The district nazim also tabled two resolutions demanding allocation of funds for Haripur district equal to Balochistan from the Khushal Pakistan Fund, and permission for formation of project committees of the house. He said that although the people of Haripur had rendered sacrifices for the country they had been deprived of their share of uplift schemes from the KPF.
In an effort to improve the education system, he said, Haripur would be divided into four zones namely Ghazi, Lower Tanawal, Haripur proper and Khanpur. Also, women councillors and the house committee on education will visit schools and monitor the performance of the education department.
VARSITY PLAN: Mr Khan has said that the Higher Education Commission had approved plans for an engineering university in Haripur.
“The modalities for implementing the plan will soon be worked out,” he told participants at the launching ceremony of a social audit report of the district government here.
Mr Khan said that Dr Attaur Rehman had agreed to establish an engineering university of international standard in Haripur at a cost of Rs21 billion. The district government will provide a plot of land measuring 1,000 kanals for the proposed university.
About social audit, Mr Khan said that the district government was committed to providing basic facilities to the people of all 45 UCs of Haripur.
TWO KILLED: Two persons were killed at different places in the jurisdiction of Khalabat Township here.
Police quoted one Khalid Javed Khan of sector No 2 Khalabat Township as saying that his 15-year-old son Rahil Khan was cleaning a rifle when it accidentally went off. The boy was seriously injured and taken to the DHQ hospital in Haripur where he was pronounced dead.
In the second incident, according to police, one Omar Hayat of sector No 3 Khalabat Township left his house to met his friends but the next day his bullet-riddled body was spotted in a field. According to an autopsy report, the deceased had received five bullet wounds.
