Torture case culprits to be punished, says minister

LARKANA, March 31: Sindh Home Minister Rauf Siddiqui has said that a probe had been launched into complaints of Riaz Kalhoro who was tortured in Karachi by some people and asked to leave the city for good.

He said that the Muttahida Qaumi Movement did not believe in politics of revenge and for that reason more and more local people were joining the party.

Talking to newsmen at the circuit house here on Friday, Mr Siddiqui said that as soon as he learnt about Mr Kalhoro’s ordeal, he ordered the RPO Sukkur, DIG Police and DPO Larkana to submit a report in this regard after thorough investigation.

It may be mentioned that Riaz Kalhoro of Naudero was a trainee technician in the Pakistan Navy and was undergoing training in Karachi.

He was kidnapped by terrorists and severely tortured before being asked to leave the job and the city. “MQM” was carved with a knife on his chest.

Mr Siddiqui said that he was closely monitoring the probe and there were so many different aspects of the case.

The minister met Mr Kalhoro who informed him about what had happened to him in Karachi.

The minister assured him of his full cooperation and advised him to come and stay in the city without any fear.

He announced an amount of Rs50,000 for information relating to the incident so that proper investigation might be carried out and the culprits be punished under the law.

He said that nothing was on the record regarding the Riaz case as no FIR had been a lodged with any police station.

He said that in Sindh there lived Afghanis, Burmese and Bangladeshis and for them there was a law which demanded of them to get registered and made work permits in their own interest.

He said the government was collecting data of aliens through NADRA to streamline the matter.

Replying to another question, Rauf Siddiqui said the MQM had a clean stand about interests of Sindh and party chief Altaf Hussain had a firm stand about the burning issues of Sindh.

He ruled out any differences between the Sindh governor and the chief minister, saying that the Sindh government was performing well.

The minister also chaired a high-level meeting regarding law and order.

The meeting was of the view that law and order situation satisfactory in the district.

The minister asked officers too keep a vigilant eye on activities of anti-state and anti-social elements.

He said that all-out efforts should be made for protection of life, property and honour of the people without any discrimination.

He directed the DPO Larkana to abolish gambling and narcotics dens immediately and any kind of slackness in this regard would not be tolerated at any cost.

Sukkur RPO Mohammad Akbar, Larkana DIG Akhtar Gorchani, DCO Ahmed Bakhsh Khokhar, DPO Ghulam Rasool Dombki, SP (investigation) Abdul Karim Khoso, EDOs and other officials attended the meeting.

The minister took a notice of school children travelling on roofs of buses and directed the DPO to call a meeting of transporters.

He also asked EDO (education) Azam Memon to call a meeting of private schools management committees that they should ensure proper transport facilities to children and submit a report in this regard within three days.
