‘US on neo-imperialist binge’

ISLAMABAD, March 31: The United States is on a neo- imperialist binge and desires to mould other societies according to its whims without trying to remove injustices. This was stated by Tahir Amin, a professor of International Relations at the Quaid-i-Azam University, at a lecture he delivered at the Islamabad Science Forum here on Friday.

There is now a greater movement towards globalization, he said, adding that the world was going through a period of transition, leaving the age of nationalism behind.

The professor said the US was certainly averse to comprehending the change. Illustrating an example of how the US had lagged behind in tracing the changing matrix of the world, particularly after the disintegration of the former Soviet Union, he spoke about a lunch he was invited to by the then US president Bill Clinton’s assistant secretary for defence Joseph Nyer.

Mr Nyer asked the scholar how could the US guide nuclear facilities of Pakistan. Simple! Amin replied. “Provide guarantees against India.” On this, Mr Nyer said the US was not prepared to offer any such guarantee.

He quoted a recent study by Washington Post, which showed that 48 per cent of American citizens believed that Islam was a violent religion. He also quoted from the interviews of suspected terrorists of 9/11 episode, mentioned in the report of the commission formed to study the incident.

Mr Amin said nearly all the interviewees said they had taken part in the horrendous act because of the injustice being meted out to Palestine by the US and due to its support for anti- Palestinian policy of Israel. But not a single word was mentioned in the report as to how the situation could be rectified.

He said the international political community had transformed significantly during the course of the 20th century, and now nationalism was being rapidly replaced by multiple world orders.

Prof Amin’s talk was a summation of his project that is a joint study of understanding the world order through different perspectives. His part in the joint study, which also involves three other professors Hawyard Alkerson, Thomas Beer Streiker and Takashi Ubermuchi, was the analysis of political security environment.

Earlier, Dr Inayetullah, who presided over the event, gave a resume of the activities and projects of the Science Forum. — Jonaid Iqbal
