CPNE opposes unilateral decision on Press Council


KARACHI, March 31: A meeting of the standing committee of the Council of Pakistan Newspapers Editors (CPNE) held here on Friday discussed various aspects of government-press relations, publication of blasphemous cartoons in western newspapers and its reaction in the Muslim world.

The meeting was informed that the viewpoint of the CPNE and APNS on the issue of Press Council had been communicated to the government and officials concerned told that the national press would not accept any unilateral decision.

Saying that the issue of blasphemous cartoons should not be ignored, the participants demanded that a permanent committee be formed the CPNE take up the matter at the international level and convey its feelings to the European press.

The meeting stressed the need for joint efforts by journalists of the East and the West to ensure that no blasphemous material was published in future.—PPI
