DURBAN, March 25: Australian batsman Michael Hussey felt his side were in a strong position to win the second Test against South Africa since the pitch was likely to be difficult for batting on the last two days.
Hussey shepherded the tail while scoring himself 75 as the last three wickets added 110 to take Australia to 369 in the first innings.
“It was very rewarding. It was a good effort because we had to work hard to get our runs. I think it’s a good total on this pitch. If we can break this partnership there’s a good chance of taking two or three wickets quickly.”
South Africa ended the second day at 140 for two despite losing skipper Graeme Smith and Herschelle Gibbs cheaply.
South African coach Mickey Arthur praised Australia for trying to stay on the field as long as possible.
“They showed they wanted to be positive,” he said.
Arthur admitted the South African dressing room was “a little bit nervous” when two wickets fell early but he said Jacques Kallis was a batsman able to calm the nerves of his team-mates.
“Jacques is awesome. As long as he’s there there’s a certain calmness in the dressing room,” the coach added.—AFP
