Horse-racing: Harry Potter fancied for today’s big prize

By Anwar Zuberi

KARACHI, March 25: Four-year-old bay colt, Harry Potter, who opened the year on a winning note and making its appearance after a lapse of about two months, is fancied to lift the Pakistan Day Cup in the Winter Gymkhana race meeting at the Karachi Racecourse on Sunday.

Drawn in a field of 10 contestants in the sixth six furlongs race, Harry Potter have to bring about his best in overcoming at least two good horses Blue Breeze and Moon Raker for a repeat performance. The race is restricted for Pakistani horses in class 111 and 1V.

Piloted home by jockey Sohail Ahmed by two lengths clocking 1min 15 2/5 seconds in the Jan 29 meeting, he starts as our days’ best.

A card of eight races including a cup race has been chalked out for the day. The first race of the programme begins at 1.00pm.

Seven-year-old bay mare, Royal Beauty, look certain to pick up the opener by making amends of her previous loss. She should be chased by First Shot and Street Fighter.

However, if tried by connections, nine-year-old dark bay mare, Sweet Sindhri, can upset the applecart.

If all goes well, eight-year-old Jaguar should make it three in a row by picking up the second race.

He has proved his mettle in the last two successive meetings winning both smartly by seven lengths and in the same timings of 1 min 6 3/5 seconds.

Jaguar should be followed home by Royal Lancer and Silent Love for the places.

Mare Raat Ki Rani is fancied to sprint to victory in the next race by improving her performance. Tag Team and Beautiful Bee should follow her for places.

However, bay mare, Phool Choice, if tried, could provide an element of surprise.

Pitted in a pack of 18 aspirants, four-year-old bay colt, Super Salute, should outpace opponent’s to clinch the fourth race. He should be followed by Princess Ridda and Fascinate.

Tauseef Siddiqui’s filly, Bright And Early, should pick up spoils in the next by finishing ahead of mares Sonia and Countess Mah Again.
