Asghar only bright spot


KARACHI, March 17: After a dissapointing start by Pakistan in Commonwealth Games, pugilist Asghar Ali Shah brought some smile for the country when he won his first round bout in style in lightweight category on Friday at Melbourne, Australia.

According to the details made available, the first punches in the boxing have been thrown Friday, with 34 bouts being contested over two sessions in the lightweight, light welterweight, welterweight and heavyweight divisions.

Asghar defeated Wulf Sada of Samoa 26-9 in four rounds to confirm his berth in the next stages of the event.

The former CW Games silver medallist, Asghar made a brilliant comeback afer having trailed 3-7 in the first round, to win next three rounds 10-1, 5-1, 8-0 to seal triumph in first round.

Earlier, Pakistan won two matches and lost one in the table tennis in Pool C. Pakistan overcame Sri Lanka 3-1 and whitewashed Kenya 3-0 but were well beaten by fancied England 3-0. So far Pakistan have won three matches and lost two.

Meanwhile, Pakistan’s Ishtiaq Ghafoor finished fourth in 62kg weightlifting event. Ishtiaq missed the bronze medal by three kgs. Malaysian Abdul Rashid Roswadi with a lift of 261 earned bronze as compared to Ishtiaq’s 258.

The gold and silver were clinched by Sri Lanka’s Chinthana and India’s Arun Munegesan who both were credited with 271kg.
