Briton expelled from media box for betting
MOHALI, March 12: Cricket officials on Sunday removed a British national from the media enclosure for allegedly betting during the second Test match between India and England.
M.P. Pandove, joint secretary of the Indian cricket board, said his accreditation was cancelled following complaints from Indian journalists.
Pandove described him as “a 21-year-old British national posing as a freelance journalist,” but withheld his name.
Indian journalists complained that the British national was using the media enclosure for betting.
Pandove said authorities had erred in issuing him an entry pass for the media enclosure without verifying his credentials.
“The fellow landed just before the start of the match and told officials that he was a freelance journalist based in the United Kingdom and we extended accreditation to him,” Pandove said.
He said local cricket authorities didn’t take any action against him other than cancelling his accreditation.—AP
