Davenport dominates, Sharapova advances

INDIAN WELLS (California), March 11: Lindsay Davenport dodged a downpour while a string of other women’s seeds had to battle wintry weather to reach the the third round of the US$5.27m ATP Masters Series and WTA hardcourt tournament.

Davenport, the second seed, dusted off Ashley Harkleroad 6-0, 6-0 on Friday, recalling her 6-0, 6-0 rout of Russian Maria Sharapova en route to the final here last year.

The win put her safely back in the locker room before a series of desert showers brought play to a halt for 3hrs 41min.

Sharapova, seeded third this year behind Belgian Justine Henin-Hardenne and Davenport, said she gave little thought to that crushing defeat during her 6-4, 6-3 victory over American Jamea Jackson.

she just tried to stay focused as the rain postponed the start of her match and adjust the wintry conditions that followed several days of more typical warm desert weather.

Fifth-seeded Russian Anastasia Myskina also advanced, downing Mashona Washington of the United States 6-2, 6-2 in a match halted in the middle by the showers, while No. 7 Anna-Lena Groenefeld of Germany finished off compatriot Julia Schruff 6-1, 6-0 before the weather turned sour.

Former world number one Martina Hingis, seeded 19th as she continues her return from a retirement that to many seemed premature, subdued French qualifier Camille Pin 6-1, 6-3 in the curtainraiser of a delayed night session.

While the women’s seeds entered the fray after enjoying first-round byes, men’s action on Friday belonged to the unseeded players battling for second-round berths.

Former world number one Marat Safin of Russia, continuing his comeback from a career-threatening knee injury, defeated qualifier Amer Delic 6-3, 6-4, finishing off the second set after the lengthy break.

Safin was in for a quick turnaround, with his second-round match against Spain’s Carlos Moya scheduled for Saturday.

Third-seeded Andy Roddick was set to be the main men’s attraction on Saturday, headlining the night session, while world number one Roger Federer and second-seeded Spaniard Rafael Nadal weren’t due to open their campaigns until Sunday.

Teenage sensation Andy Murray booked a second-round berth with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Greek qualifier Vasilis Mazarakis in a match put on hold by weather seemingly more suited to his native Scotland.
