PESHAWAR, March 11: The CID on Saturday claimed to have arrested two alleged terrorists and recovered a large cache of arms and explosives from their vehicle in Hangu district.

The two accused were smuggling 100 rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs), two rocket launchers and 96 fuses from Khyber to the Orakzai Agency for terrorism, said Assistant Inspector-General of CID Ehsan Tufail in a press conference here.

“One of the rocket launcher is Russian-made, while another one is Chinese,” the official informed.

“We are interrogating the accused and the purpose of these weapons will be ascertained after securing their remands,” he said.

The van, from which arms were recovered, was stopped on the Tall-Duaba road in Hangu district on Friday evening, he said. Mr Ehsan said that the CID had arrested Azam Khan and Muslim Shah, both residents of Shena Waray village.

Hangu has remained tense since the Ashur day last month after a suicide bombing and sectarian violence which claimed more than 30 lives.

He said that the explosives and weapons were being smuggled for terrorism.

“The accused can be terrorists or they may be arms carriers but we are sure that the weapons are meant for terrorism,” he said.

The CID has registered a case under 7 Anti-Terrorism Act.
