KARACHI, March 7: The Sindh High Court on Tuesday issued notices to the federal ministry of culture and the central board of films censors for March 14 in a petition of by a film production company seeking permission for screening of its pre-partition film.
M/s Mehboob Motion Picture Company, which produced film ‘Anmol Ghari’ in 1946 is aggrieved by persistent denial of respondents to certify its film for exhibition. It was contended that the print of the film was in Karachi at the time of partition in 1947 and the film was neither imported from nor produced in India. The petitioner submitted two others films, ‘Noor Jehan’ and ‘Kashish’, produced in India, were allowed exhibition in 1984 but it remains deprived of permission for reasons best known to respondents.
According to the petitioner, Pakistani singer/actress Noor Jehan was in the lead role and the movie did not contain anything prejudicial to the interests of Pakistan, Islamic values or morality.
The court was requested to direct the censor board to issue necessary certificate and allow the exhibition of the film.
An SHC division bench, comprising Justices Anwar Zaheer Jamali and Mohammad Athar Saeed, after preliminary hearing of petition, issued notices to respondents as well as a federal attorney.
DAMAGES SUIT: Justice Mrs Qiaser Iqbal of the Sindh High Court reserved order in nine suits for damages instituted by the legal heirs of the workers of Pakistan Steel.
The workers received fatal injuries when they were trapped in molten steel overflowing from the ladle in the wee hours of June 6, 2001.
The plaintiffs’ counsel, Nasir Maqsood, submitted that the accident occurred because of the mills management’s negligence and it was obliged under the Fatal Accidents Act to pay compensation to the dependants of the deceased. PSM counsel Akhtar Ali Mahmood argued that no negligence on the management’s part was involved and it was not liable to pay damages for a technical industrial mishap.
PLEA DISPOSED OF: A division bench of the Sindh High Court, comprising Justice Syed Zawwar Hussain Jaffery and Maqbool Baqar, on Tuesday disposed of a constitutional petition alleging his harassment by the Sachal Police, adds agencies.
Ali Nawaz moved the court alleging that he owns a five acres in Deh Songal, Malir adjacent to Post Office Cooperative Housing Society.
He alleged that for the last two months, office-bearers of Post Office Society and police were harassing him to annex the land owned by him.
When the matter came up for hearing, counsel for petitioner said that the petitioner would be satisfied if direction is given to the respondents not to harass the petitioner.
The bench, allowing the request, disposed of the petition with directives to the official respondents not to harass him.
The bench also ordered that any action against the petitioner shall be taken strictly in accordance with the law.
SENT TO JAIL: Justice Khliji Arif Hussain of the Sindh High Court, who is also administrative judge of anti-terrorism courts in Karachi, on Tuesday sent three accused, facing kidnapping for ransom charges to jail and directed the investigation officer to submit chargesheet against them on March 14.
Abdul Ghani, Ismail and Yameen are accused of kidnapping Tauseef Qureshi for ransom from Bahadurabad on January 1.
