PESHAWAR: 89kg of heroin found in car

By Our Correspondent

PESHAWAR, March 7: The customs intelligence seized 89kg of brown heroin from a vehicle left behind by smugglers after a car chase on Jamrud Road, an official said on Tuesday.

Deputy Director Sayed Shakeel Shah said the outlaws planned to smuggle the drug to Punjab for its subsequent transportation to some foreign country.

On the basis of a tip-off, a customs intelligence team was deployed on Jamrud Road near the Hayatabad Town-Kacha Ghari intersection on Monday. It waited for the vehicle. When the customs personnel tried to stop a car at around 7pm, it sped away towards Board area, Mr Shah said.

A customs intelligence vehicle started chasing the car, but smugglers left it on the roadside and escaped taking advantage of darkness, he said.

The customs team found packets of brown heroin hidden in secret cavities of the car, the source said, adding that the consignment weighed 89kg.

A case has been registered against unidentified smugglers.

Sources in the customs intelligence department said that the main smugglers belonged to the Khyber Agency.
