KARACHI, Feb 24: Pakistan Navy on Friday inducted into its fleet two indigenously built fast-attack missile craft Quwwat and Jurrat at an impressive ceremony held here at the Karachi Shipyard and Engineering Works.

Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Muhammad Afzal Tahir was the chief guest on the occasion.

“The induction of these missile boats heralds a new era for Pakistan Navy in missile craft construction,” said Admiral Tahir at the ceremony.

“It has also laid the foundation for a viable shipbuilding industry in the country,” Admiral Tahir said, adding that the Navy would continue to capitalise on its potential.

The missile craft are 30 metres long and can travel at speeds of more than 30 knots with displacement of 250 tons. They are fitted with state-of-the-art weapons and sensors, including electronic warfare systems and fire control radar.

In the changed maritime scenario, the admiral said the navy’s undertakings had increased manifold and warranted development of a balanced outfit capable of safeguarding legitimate maritime interests.

“To this end, our frigate project has already materialized which will commence soon with the Chinese collaboration in the region. Induction of these fast attack missile craft into PN fleet will certainly enhance its offensive punch,” he added.

Acknowledging the government’s efforts to equip the navy with the latest weaponry and provide it with a infrastructure compatible to modern needs, he said: “The government has paid full attention to the maritime sector and the development of Gwadar port and coastal highway were significant steps in that direction.”

He congratulated all the engineers and technicians of Karachi Shipyard and Engineering Works on achieving this significant milestone.—APP
